How do you make sure that your party makes it to the midterm elections?
Here are 10 strategies to ensure that they win again in 2020.
| AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster House Speaker Paul Ryan is poised to take a new direction with Congress, one that he has been trying to implement in the past two years.
He announced on Tuesday that he will seek re-election to the post, which will be his fourth term in the House.
His bid comes at a pivotal moment for Republicans as the midterm races near, as Democrats are looking to retake the House and take back the Senate in November.
Ryan is hoping to make his mark as House Speaker, a role that he had held since the 2010 midterm elections.
Ryan has been a proponent of bipartisan cooperation with Democrats on a range of issues.
He is also looking to take the reins of the party, as his predecessor, Nancy Pelosi, announced her retirement from Congress in 2020 to focus on a new job.
The GOP will need to hold on to the House, but Ryan said that if the party doesn’t get to pick its next speaker, he would consider running again.
“If we don’t have a candidate that is going to get this party back to work, then I’ll have a very tough choice,” Ryan said.
“But if I can get that person elected, then that’s what I’m going to do.”
The House majority leader also took time to congratulate the first woman to serve as chair of the Democratic National Committee, the first African-American woman to lead the DNC, and the first Hispanic to chair the DNC.
“As chair of a major party, I have to give props to our Democratic leaders for all that they’ve done to elevate the party,” Ryan told the crowd.
“There is no one better than the DNC for advancing progressive ideals, fighting for social justice and fighting for fairness.
I want to thank our Democratic party for that.”
Ryan said that he would be voting for Democrats in the 2020 presidential election, but did not specify what he would do.
“We’re gonna have to see what happens,” Ryan continued.
“I’m not going to say, ‘I’m gonna go to work on the DNC in 2020.’
I’m not doing that.
But we’re going to have to do a lot of work to find a Democrat that we think can be a great president.”
